Private campsites & glamping in Tabernash, CO

Tabernash is a quiet crossroads in the Fraser Valley, ten minutes from Winter Park and an hour and change from Denver - close enough for a weekend, far enough to feel like the real Rockies. At 8,300 feet between the Continental Divide and the Indian Peaks, it's a launchpad for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and summer trail riding.

There's little in the way of town here - a few restaurants and a gas station - so plan on Winter Park or Fraser for supplies and nightlife. The payoff is space: sprawling ranch valleys, dark night skies, and trail systems that empty out the moment you leave the resort corridors.

Camping in Tabernash: FAQs

Is Tabernash a good alternative to staying in Winter Park?

Yes - it's typically quieter and better value, with the ski area 10-15 minutes away. You'll trade walk-to-lift convenience for elbow room and lower rates.

What's the winter driving like?

US-40 over Berthoud Pass can be treacherous in storms; check cotrip.org and carry traction. The Fraser Valley itself is generally well plowed.

Best time for fall color?

Mid-to-late September. The aspen groves along the Fraser River and up toward Rollins Pass are excellent.

Can I ride the trails in summer without a guide?

Much of the Fraser Valley trail system is open to the public for hiking and biking - grab a map in Winter Park. Horseback riding is best done through a ranch outfitter.

How's the stargazing?

Excellent. The valley's elevation and distance from Denver's glow make for superb Milky Way viewing on moonless nights.
