Private campsites & glamping in Grand Lake, CO

Grand Lake is Colorado's largest natural lake, cupped beneath the Never Summer Mountains at the western gate of Rocky Mountain National Park. The town itself is a classic boardwalk village - wooden sidewalks, ice-cream shops, and sailboats - that still feels like the 1950s in the best way.

Summer is peak: boating, the RMNP west-side trailheads, and the Kawuneeche Valley's moose and elk. The park's timed-entry system applies here too, so plan ahead. Winter is hushed and snowy, with snowmobiling and ice fishing replacing the summer bustle.

Questions, answered

Camping in Grand Lake: FAQs

Do I need a timed entry permit for RMNP from Grand Lake?

Yes, during the reservation season (typically late May-mid-October) you'll need a timed-entry permit for the park, booked on Recreation.gov. They release in advance and sell out fast.

When does Trail Ridge Road open?

Usually late May, closing in October with the first big snow. It's the only through-road across the park to Estes Park - check the park's status line before counting on it.

Is Grand Lake swimmable?

Technically yes, but it's snowmelt - expect water in the 60s even in August. Most people boat, paddle, and fish rather than swim.

What's the best moose viewing?

The Kawuneeche Valley along the Colorado River headwaters, especially at dawn and dusk. Keep 75+ feet of distance - moose are unpredictable.

Is Grand Lake open in winter?

The town stays open but quiet. RMNP's west side is largely snowed in; Trail Ridge Road closes. Snowmobile tours and nearby Granby Ranch skiing fill the gap.
