Private campsites & glamping in Grant, CO

Grant is a wide spot on US-285 at the foot of Guanella Pass - a former railroad and logging outpost that's now mostly a gateway. At 8,600 feet in the Pike National Forest, it sits between two spectacular alpine passes: Guanella to the north, Kenosha to the south.

There's almost nothing in Grant itself - a couple of cafes and a general store - which is exactly the point. It's a staging area for the Mount Evans Wilderness, the Colorado Trail, and some of the Front Range's best high-country driving. Denver is about an hour east; Fairplay 30 minutes west.

Camping in Grant: FAQs

Is Guanella Pass open year-round?

No - typically closed by snow from around Thanksgiving through late May. When open, it's one of Colorado's great scenic drives, topping 11,670 feet.

Can I hike a 14er from Grant?

Mount Bierstadt's standard route starts at the Guanella Pass summit - about 7 miles round trip and one of Colorado's most popular 14ers. Start before 6am to beat storms and crowds.

What's the best time to visit?

Late June-September for high-country access. Aspens along the pass peak in late September.

Is there anywhere to eat?

A handful of seasonal spots in Grant itself; Bailey (15 minutes east) has more options. Most visitors self-cater.

Do I need 4WD?

US-285 is fine in any vehicle in good weather. Guanella Pass is paved but steep; winter storms demand AWD/4WD and traction.
