Private campsites & glamping in Texas

Texas is too big for one kind of camping, and that's exactly the point. The private stays in this state span limestone Hill Country rivers, Chihuahuan Desert mountains, high-desert art towns, piney East Texas woods, and the Gulf Coast — five different trips that happen to share a flag.

The Hill Country is the engine of Texas glamping: spring-fed rivers (the Medina, Guadalupe, and Frio), live-oak shade, and a wine corridor along Highway 290 that has turned towns like Fredericksburg into weekend magnets. Private land here means yurts with hot tubs a block off Main Street, treehouses suspended over the trees, and riverside cabins where the swimming hole is the whole itinerary. Spring wildflower season — late March through April, when the bluebonnets arrive — books out first; October and November bring the year's best weather.

Then there's the west. Big Bend is the headline: a national park the size of Rhode Island, ringed by a loose constellation of private domes, yurts, and RV parks in Terlingua and Study Butte that absorb everyone the park's campgrounds can't hold — which, from October through April, is most people. Farther west, Marfa pairs high-desert minimalism with some of the darkest skies in North America, anchored by the McDonald Observatory's star parties an hour up the road.

East Texas and the Gulf Coast round it out: pine-forest treehouses within ninety minutes of Dallas, vintage campers on the Brazos, and Airstreams a short walk from Rockport's beaches. The practical notes are Texas-sized too. Summer is genuinely brutal almost everywhere from May through September — plan desert and Hill Country trips for October through April, and treat East Texas and the coast as spring-and-fall destinations. Distances deceive: Terlingua to the nearest real grocery store is about 80 miles. Fill the tank, carry more water than seems reasonable, and let the private-land hosts do what the reservation sites can't — get you a bed under dark sky on reasonable notice.
