Private campsites & glamping in Antonito, CO

Antonito is a historic railroad town in the Conejos River Valley, best known as the eastern terminus of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad - America's longest and highest narrow-gauge steam railroad. At 7,800 feet on the edge of the San Luis Valley, it's a launchpad for the southern San Juans without the resort-town filter.

The town is small and unpretentious - a few restaurants, basic services - but the surroundings are rich: the Conejos River's gold-medal trout water, the scenic railroad's all-day excursions, and the wild San Juan backcountry. Alamosa is 30 minutes north for supplies.

Camping in Antonito: FAQs

Is the Cumbres & Toltec worth it?

Unqualified yes - it's the finest steam railroad experience in America, climbing to 10,015 feet over Cumbres Pass. Book the parlor car or open gondola well ahead; it sells out.

Can I fish the Conejos River?

Yes - it's some of Colorado's best trout water, with public access points and private ranch stretches. A Colorado license is required.

What's the best season?

Late May-October for the railroad and full access. Fall color along the railroad grade in late September is extraordinary.

How far is Taos?

About 1.5 hours south - an easy day trip combining New Mexico art town culture with Colorado mountain scenery.

Is Antonito a good base for the San Juans?

For the southern San Juans and the Conejos headwaters, yes. For Ouray/Telluride, it's 2.5+ hours - stay closer if those are your focus.
