East Tennessee · Tennessee
Erwin is a railroad town in the Nolichucky Valley where the Appalachian Trail passes within a mile of Main Street. Glamping here is mountain-luxury-meets-trail-town: safari tents and Airstreams with private baths, backed up against Pisgah National Forest with waterfall hikes and AT access out the door. Asheville is 50 minutes east; Johnson City 30 minutes north.
Practical notes: the Nolichucky River offers Class III-IV rafting through the gorge — outfitters run spring through fall. Fall color arrives earlier here than in the Smokies proper, usually mid-October.
